Mark Luczak is a first generation Polish American, born, raised, and living with his gay dads and two rambunctious cats in Brooklyn. He studied Graphic Design at CUNY, New York City College of Technology and received his BFA in Illustration from The Fashion Institute of Technology. Working in the American realist tradition of Edward Hopper, and George Tooker, Luczak’s paintings build on his workshop studies with Max Ginsberg. His approach is representational; ideas are explored through direct observational drawings and the photographic references he takes. An aged, weary man in his garden, someone pulling a cart – these seemingly mundane experiences and characters inhabit his isolated compositions. He imagines the inner dialogues and realities of people as they struggle to get through their day. Memories and thoughts mingle with experiences, creating a nostalgic, sometimes surrealistic image.

Predominantly working with oil paints, occasionally switching to water-based mediums such as gouache and acrylics. “I’m very aware of the materials I use due to the conservation workshop I attended, focusing on the use of durable supports and high-quality paints”, says Luczak. His work has been recognized by 3X3 magazine, SOI Student Scholarship Competition, and American Illustration’s 40th Annual.
